Mulberry: British lifestyle fashion

Like no other, Mulberry stands for British lifestyle embodied in fashion. The influence of the British hunting tradition and their typical style can be traced back to the personal hobby of the founder Roger Saul: Simple, monochrome designs that are well-suited for everyday life and yet exude a touch of luxury represent the trademark of the British fashion label.

Mulberry

Mulberry was founded in 1971 by Roger Saul – at the kitchen table of his Somerset mansion, where the avid hunter lived. With 500 pounds’ worth of support from his mother, the company Mulberry was established.

His vision was to create robust, functional fashion for the upper classes. This idea was translated into durable, resistant fashion created made from elegant materials – just perfectly fit for athletic hunting endeavors. At first, however, Roger Saul made a name with belts or headbands. He was particularly noted for his focus on craftsmanship in leatherworking, combined with pleasantly modern designs.

The brand was considered the epitome of wearable lifestyle fashion for occasions such as joint English tea or exercise, e.g. at the Hunt. Over the years, the focus of the brand has shifted to more conservative hunting clothing such as jackets and matching accessories. Nevertheless, or perhaps because of that, Mulberry handbags were early on a statement for the high society in Great Britain.

Even today, the company is remarkably rooted in the home region of Somerset: The company headquarters are still located in the home of Mulberry founder Roger Saul. He left the company in 2003 to devote himself to growing organic food in Sharpham Park, a farm in the UK.

Emma Hill and Johnny Coca currently design for the Mulberry brand. Numerous awards honor the efforts of the luxury label Mulberry, which prioritizes English tradition and high product quality over modern manufacturing processes. For example, the fashion house received the "Queen's Award for Export" on several occasions as well as two times the “Classic Designer of the Year” award. Even chief designer Emma Hill has been awarded several prizes, for example by the popular magazines Glamour and ELLE.

The trademark of the Mulberry brand still lies in the classic, English chic. A must-have is the “Alexa”, which is one of the leather-made Mulberry handbags. Like many other Mulberry handbags, this one-shoulder-bag model is named after one of the fashion world’s biggest style icons, in this case Alexa Chung.
